OK, so Shane and I went to see Memoirs of a Geisha last night. First off, we were slightly late, because there was no parking in the Baywalk garage, so we could only find seats in the absolute front row of the movie theatre. In my opinion, they don't have any business putting seats that close to a screen that big. I was constantly swinging my head to view action on one side of the screen, then the other. Shane said he was getting motion sickness.

Secondly, I've read the book, and thought it was incredibly good. I guess it was kind of an introspective book. The main character comes to terms with a situation that is out of her control, i.e., getting sold to a Geisha house by her family. It did not translate to a movie well, at ALL!

The movie was comprised of dull gray scenes of old Japan, punctuated by long silences, in which all you could do was look at the scenery and think about how bleak it was. Blah, I was so over the movie. It was LONG too!!!!

There were some high points, such as Suyuri's dance that she did in these CRAZY shoes, and also the quote from one of the other geisha from after the war. Sayuri and her are sent to meet some soldiers, and the other girl shows up looking all kinds of trashy, hanging out of a jeep, yelling, You Boys Lik-a Da Whiskey!? It was hilarious.
